| Bio: | Sequel to “Blank Sheet” (M.’s Crime) M. had woken from a bad dream. In the dream he had murdered his own Muse (“In Cold Ink,” he’d later recall). He had done it with a single sheet of paper. The edge of the paper had been sharp enough to slice his Muse in two separate halves. I didn’t know that you were made of such flimsy material! M. had said in the dream, more to himself than to his Muse. No one had answered, and he had been left in total darkness, feeling lonesome and scared. In order to pass the time, M. had tried to write a story about a writer who had killed his Muse because She had stopped providing him with ideas, but he was not able to proceed very far, for his hand had suddenly became paralyzed by the gravity of his own heinous crime. When he’d at last turned away in resignation from the blank sheet of paper on his desk, his Muse was hovering over him, a black, viscous fluid leaking from her orifices; she was wielding a giant, sickle-like sheet of razor-sharp paper that moved closer and closer until, finally, M. opened his eyes and mouth in a silent scream. He wiped beads of sweat from his brow with the sheets on the bed, and then he sat up. It was pleasantly cool in the room, and the hum of the refrigerator down the hall soothed his frayed nerves. He stood up, walked to the kitchen, and made himself a cup of black tea. Although he hadn’t written anything new in weeks, he now had an idea for a fresh story. The Muse had sacrificed Herself for M.’s inspiration, and presently She was back again; the blank sheet of paper on his desk no longer terrified him. M. wielded his pen with authority and began to write… – 2007 | |
